When you’re alone in wild country you realize you don’t mean much. You could be eaten by a bear or snatched by aliens. Yet the sun will rise, the river will flow, and sheep will eat on the mountain.
Each year come Independence Day, I contemplate the decision on the American wild turkey versus the American bald eagle as our country’s mascot. Did the founders make the right choice?

If you haven’t missed a turkey, then you haven’t hunted them very much. But the secret is it’s way easier to miss a turkey close than it is to miss one out there 20, 30 or 40 yards away.
This was the most spectacular display of northern lights you can imagine! You ever try to eat spaghetti with your head tipped back and your eyes riveted on the sky? We made a mess.
A caution about serving this in camp. You’ll need to stand late-night guard over the cache because, guaranteed, you’ll have guests attempting midnight raids—it’s that good!

Green. Green. Green. Everything is green. I’m settled in against the trunk of a Ponderosa pine in South Dakota’s northern Black Hills. The sun is shining. The sky is blue; just enough breeze to make 70° comfortable.

For a camp cook who takes pride in his or her work, few rewards are as sweet as the smile on a face of a diner turned from being a “hater” into a “lover”—as in “I love Brussels sprouts … the way YOU make them!”
