Powerful, vivid memories are triggered by smells. When the author inherits a gun cabinet from his grandfather, opening the door for the first time uncorks a deluge of scented memories.
Ten gray Rubbermaid tubs serve as our kitchen cabinets. Carefully positioned on each tub is a large, white adhesive label bearing block printing in black ink precisely stating the contents of each vessel. God Bless my wife!

Dad grabbed my upper arm and squeezed, then gestured to the back. He wanted Gunner up front by him. The dog sat on the floor between his withered legs and melted into Dad’s lap.

It’s all about improvisation, so when it comes recipes, I can tell you what as on the menu and how we prepared it, but to tell you how much of each ingredient … I’d be making it up.
